If you don’t know the term at all, they can be deceiving you about work you don’t really need to do. So, pay close attention to the following article as one of your important assets before entering a car repair shop to take care of your car.
10 Terms in the Workshop That Owners Should Know
As a vehicle owner, you must have done maintenance or repair of vehicles at a subscription repair shop, right? Usually starting from light work such as changing oil, tuneup, to getting off the engine. When doing car repairs, car owners will often hear the term from mechanics or workshop owners. Some people may be familiar with the terms in the workshop, but maybe there are some people who still don’t really understand these terms. Here are some terms that are often used by workshops to explain processes or jobs to consumers.
Tune-up is a car maintenance job to restore engine performance to normal. It usually includes oil change service, platinum adjustment, valve adjustment, cleaning spark plugs, filter filters and so on that can restore engine performance. However, for the latest cars, the term tune-up is no longer used. This is because the latest cars already use an electric system so there is no need to do a reset. Workshops replace the term tuneup with regular maintenance on new cars. Periodic maintenance includes oil changes, filter changes, spark plug changes, and so on.
2. Get off the Car Engine
The term down the engine is the process of removing the engine from the car body. This work is usually done if there is a problem with the engine’s internals that requires removing the engine from the body to repair it. Workshops generally distinguish the machine usually into two types. The first is down by half. Lower the engine halfway if there is engine damage in the cylinder head area such as packing leaks, curved heads, bent valves, and so on. The second engine down is a full engine down. Namely removing the engine as a whole from the car body. If the engine drops completely, it is usually when there is a problem with the engine components in the block assembly such as crankshaft, metal, piston problems, and so on.
An overhaul is a process of dismantling certain components whose construction is quite complicated. This term is actually a general term that applies to cars. Overhaul work can include such as dismantling the engine, dismantling the automatic transmission, and dismantling the axle. But what is clear, overhaul work is work on components or parts that require time and high accuracy.
DTC stands for Diagnostic Trouble Code or some call it fault code. That is the code that is read on the scanner if there is damage or error in the electrical system on the machine that has the module. This can happen to the engine, body, ABS, and so on. Mechanics use this code as a reference to analyze the damage that has occurred. Remember in every new car there are lots of modules, for example, the engine module or ECU, transmission module or PCM, ABS module, and several other modules. All data in these modules can experience problems that we term as DTCs.
5. Learning or Adaptation
Learning is the process of adjusting or resetting sensors or actuators after replacing or repairing these components. For example, the throttle body needs to be learned or re-adapted after the cleaning process is carried out. This is because the throttle valve position will definitely change after we clean the part. Another example is that after overhauling the automatic transmission, we need to learn to adjust the solenoid in the transmission.
Coding is the process of entering a program into the control unit which aims to make the software in the control unit match the type of vehicle. We can do coding online or manually. If we do it online then we only need to download the software. And if we do it manually, we need to enter the code according to the program that the manufacturer has specified. Some automotive manufacturers refer to the coding process as programming.
7. Software Updates
Workshops usually carry out software updates when there is technical information from ATPM about program updates on the control unit which aims to improve the performance of the control unit.
8. Water hammer
Water hammer is a term to describe water entering the engine cylinder. It usually occurs when the car is hit by a flood and water is sucked into the engine. When water enters the engine cylinder, it will cause the water to be compressed by the piston. This happens because the nature of water that cannot be compressed will cause damage to components that are quite fatal, such as bent pistons or broken engine blocks.

9. Spooring balancing
Spooring is an alignment or process on a car to realign the four wheels of the car as before, according to the factory settings. Usually, the two front wheels will be straightened and set to return to normal. While balancing is an adjustment or effort to maintain balance at the top, bottom, or left and right points of the wheel by adding lead to the missing part. Usually, this is done after changing tires or wheels, and if the kilometers have reached the limit for balancing.
Misfire or ignition error is a condition where there is no ignition of the engine cylinder. The causes of misfire vary from spark plugs, coils, compression, and so on. To see if there is a misfire on the engine, we can look at symptoms such as a lame and unstable engine. But the easiest way is to use a scanner and look at the misfire data, it will be clear where and how many times there have been misfires.
