5 Symptoms of a Bad MAP Sensor And How To Fix It? – The Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor, commonly known as the MAP sensor, is part of the engine’s electronic control system. The main function of this sensor is to create optimal combustion in the engine. When the Manifold Pressure Sensor is Faulty, the fuel control activity is disrupted. This affects the overall engine performance. Therefore, in order to detect such problems at an early stage, it is important to consider the symptoms of a bad MAP sensor.

What Do MAP Sensors Work?

The MAP sensor is in charge of calculating the pressure in the manifold. In detail, the main work of this sensor is to provide manifold pressure information to the PCM or ECU. Furthermore, the Powertrain Control Module uses this data to determine the amount of fuel injected into the cylinder. Apart from that, the MAP sensor also helps in controlling the ignition timing, which further prevents sparking and thus, protects the engine from any damage.

When the Manifold Absolute Sensor signals the engine’s high load to the ECM or ECU, it increases the release of fuel into the cylinders. As a result, fuel efficiency will be reduced.

Thus, it causes the emission of certain chemical elements such as carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons. The presence of these two chemical elements will increase the smog in the surrounding atmosphere.

2. Failed Emission Test
To detect symptoms of a bad MAP sensor, I highly recommend doing a consistent vehicle inspection through an emission test. If the test depicts large amounts of NO, hydrocarbon production along with low CO2 and high levels of carbon monoxide through the exhaust pipe, then this clearly indicates a problem with the MAP sensor in the system. In this case, if the chemical element threshold exceeds the requirements, the vehicle will fail the emission test.

3. Lack of Power To Engine
The MAP sensor is responsible for signaling manifold pressure to the PCM or ECM. However, if the sensor calculates the stressed load on the engine, it automatically affects all further engine functions.

Moreover, if the PCM records a low engine load, of course, it will reduce fuel injection into the engine cylinder. With this, the engine will not remain powerful enough to provide the desired output. Undoubtedly, it will increase the fuel economy but on the other hand, it will increase the temperature of the combustion chamber, thereby causing an increase in Nitrogen Oxide, which is one of the important constituents of smog.

4. Acceleration Problem
One sign of a bad MAP sensor is acceleration issues. When we are driving the car and pressing the gas pedal, we may see the car hesitating or jerking as it accelerates faster. In a bad situation, if we continue to give gas in this condition, the car will actually die completely. So in this case, the best solution that we have to do for our car is to take it to the repair shop as soon as possible.

5. Weird Smell
A strange smell is one of the symptoms of a faulty map sensor that you should be aware of. Because a bad MAP sensor will cause the wrong amount of air and fuel to mix in the combustion chamber. Sometimes there will be a little air and fuel mixed in there while other times, there will be too much mixture in there. The wrong amount of fuel mixture will cause a very strange gas smell. We will smell this strange smell after the engine is running for 2-3 minutes.

How to Repair the MAP Sensor?

As a functional MAP sensor plays an important role in the maintenance of our car. If you don’t believe that your car’s MAP sensor has a problem, here are some parts that you should check before taking your car to an auto repair shop to replace the MAP sensor.

1. Hose – On some cars, manufacturers use a hose to connect the intake manifold and the MAP sensor. So it’s best whether the MAP sensor hose is intact and connected or not. Apart from checking the MAP sensor hose, we also need to check if the port is free of dirt and carbon deposits. Blockage of the hose port can result in incorrect MAP sensor readings.

2. Check cables and connectors – Wiring between MAP sensor and ECM must be intact. Friction can cause a short circuit and breaking can cause a short circuit. Similarly, connectors must be securely connected, and pins must be straight and clean. Bent pins and corrosion can cause MAP sensor signal problems.

3. Sensor – If the MAP sensor is installed properly, either on the intake manifold or electrically, use a vacuum gun and voltage meter or scan tool to check the MAP sensor output.
