The Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system adjusts intake valve timing for improved rideability. The engine oil pressure rotates the VVT controller to adjust the valve timing.

The camshaft timing oil control valve assembly is the solenoid valve and moves the engine oil line. The valve moves when the ECM supplies 12V to the solenoid. The ECM changes the energy timing on the solenoid (duty-cycle) according to the camshaft position, crankshaft position, throttle position, etc.

The ECM sends the target duty-cycle control signal to the camshaft timing oil control valve. This control signal regulates the oil pressure supplied to the camshaft timing gear. The camshaft timing gear can advance or inhibit the intake camshaft.

If the difference between the target and actual intake valve timing is large, and the change in actual intake valve timing is small, the ECM interprets this as a jammed camshaft timing gear and stores DTC.

Example:

DTC P0011 is stored when the following conditions “A” and “B” are encountered:
1.It may take 5 seconds or more to change the valve timing by 5° CA (Condition “A”).
2. Conditions under “A” are encountered for 9.5 seconds or more (Conditions “B”).

DTC P0012 is stored when the following conditions “C” and “D” are encountered:
1. It takes 5 seconds or more to change the valve timing by 5° CA (Condition “C”).
2. Conditions under “C” are encountered for 60 seconds or more (Conditions “D”) (for Euro-OBD).
3. Conditions under “C” are encountered for 107 seconds or more (Conditions “D”) (except Euro-OBD).

This DTC indicates that the camshaft timing gear is not working properly because the camshaft timing oil control valve is damaged or there is a foreign object in the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly.

8. Idle the engine for 3 minutes or more [D].
9. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes [E].
10. Read the DTC cancellation.

INSTRUCTION:

  • If the DTC output is delayed, the system malfunctions.
  • If the DTC output is not delayed, perform the following procedure.

11. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / All Readiness.
12. Input DTC: P0011 or P0012.
13. Check the results of the DTC judgment.

INSTRUCTION:

  • If the results of the judgment show NORMAL, the system is normal.
  • If the judgment results show ABNORMAL, the system is damaged.
  • If the judgment results show INCOMPLETE or N/A, do step [F] and then [H].

14. Read the pattern of accelerating the vehicle from rest to about 60 km/h (37 mph) and then decelerating the vehicle 10 to 15 times [F].

HINT: Press the accelerator pedal firmly.

15. Idle the engine for 3 minutes or more [G].
16. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes [H].
17. Read the DTC cancellation.

INSTRUCTION:

  • If the DTC output is delayed, the system malfunctions.
  • If the DTC output is not delayed, perform the following procedure.

18. Check the results of the DTC judgment again.

INSTRUCTION:

  • If the results of the judgment show NORMAL, the system is normal.
  • If the judgment results show ABNORMAL, the system is damaged.
