Engine Oil Light On Your Car

Engine Oil Light On Your Car – When the oil warning indicator light on the dashboard lights up, it indicates the oil pressure in the engine is very low so that engine oil does not circulate optimally to lubricate moving engine components.

Engine Oil Light On Your Car

IMMEDIATELY TURN OFF THE ENGINE and move the car to a safe place, do not force the car to run in such conditions because it can cause serious damage to the engine.

There are several possible causes for the engine oil light to come on

The engine oil indicator light will light up due to the following factors:

  • The amount of oil in the engine is very less.
  • The engine oil pump is faulty so there is no oil pressure.
  • Damage to the oil pressure sensor so that even though the condition of the oil in the engine is normal, the sensor turns on the oil light on the dashboard.
  • The oil warning indicator light on the dashboard is short so that it lights up even though the lubrication system is functioning properly.

How to check and repair a lit engine oil light

If the oil dipstick shows the LOW position, the oil capacity in the engine has decreased significantly, which can be caused by an engine oil leak or due to oil entering the combustion chamber and burning.

Engine oil line leaks are the most common cause of reduced oil levels in the engine.

The most common engine oil leaks are in the valve cover area, oil crankcase gasket, and timing cover or on the front and rear crankshaft seals.

Check the top, sides, and bottom of the engine for signs of engine oil leaks.

Small engine oil leaks that have lasted for quite a long time can be seen from the dirt, dust mixed with oil that covers the leak area.

Also, pay attention to oil drops on the floor when the car is parked, if there are enough drops it indicates the engine oil leak is quite severe.

Cars with long distances (above 100,000 km) usually have leaks from seals or gaskets that have hardened due to age.

Replace the seal and gasket to repair the leak.

If the results of a visual inspection on the outside of the engine do not show any signs of leakage, then there is a possibility that engine oil may enter the combustion chamber through the worn piston ring gap.

Engine oil can also enter the combustion chamber through the gap between the valve guide and the valve guide seal due to the seal being hardened as the car travels high.

Both types of damage can only be repaired by dismantling the engine (overhaul), which of course will cost quite a bit.

If the engine oil consumption is not too severe (1 liter for 1500 km), do a regular check of the amount of oil and add engine oil to the full limit.

When the oil consumption is quite high (more than 1 liter for every 1000km), check the engine oil amount more often and always have spare oil in the car.

If the consumption of engine oil is very WASTE, then the car should be dismantled immediately to repair the damage.

Analyze the damage to the Oil Pump

When the engine oil warning light is on and you hear a loud noise from the engine, it is possible that the engine oil is not circulating properly due to a faulty oil pump.

Do not start the engine until the damage is repaired.

Check the condition of the engine oil pressure by installing a pressure gauge in the hole where the oil pressure sensor is usually mounted on the side of the engine block.

Normal oil pressure is around 10 psi at 1000 rpm. If the results of the pressure gauge measurement show below the specified value, there is a possibility that the oil pump or engine bearing is worn.

If the engine oil light is on, the oil position is between ADD and Full while the engine is running normally (no noise).

most likely the damage comes from the engine oil pressure sensor or the oil lamp itself.

In these conditions, the car is still safe to drive home or to the garage for repairs. However, if the engine sound suddenly becomes noisy, immediately turn off the engine.

How to analyze and fix low engine oil pressure

If the results of the inspection show that the engine oil is low, add engine oil until it reaches the FULL mark.

Use oil with a level of viscosity (viscosity) in accordance with the recommendations of the car manufacturer.

Do not fill engine oil until it exceeds the FULL mark.

If after adding oil, the engine oil light remains on, remove the engine oil pressure sensor and connect the pressure gauge to the sensor hole.
Start the engine and pay attention to whether the engine oil pressure matches the specification value, if the engine oil pressure is normal then the damage is not due to the oil pump but from the engine oil pressure sensor, replace the sensor.

This inspection work requires using a pressure gauge, so what if you don’t have that tool…??

If the price of the engine oil pressure sensor is not too expensive, maybe you can try buying a new sensor to make sure that the problem is caused by a faulty oil pressure sensor.

However, if the price of the sensor is expensive, it is better to take the car to a repair shop that has a pressure gauge to confirm the problem.

If after trying to use a new sensor, the engine oil light immediately turns off, then the cause of the damage is already known, namely the engine oil pressure sensor.
However, if the oil light is still on, it is suspected that the cause of the damage came from the oil pump.

A damaged or worn engine oil pump causes engine oil pressure to be low so that engine oil is not able to circulate properly to lubricate engine components.

Replace the engine oil pump with a new one, because repairing the oil pump will usually end up being futile and time-consuming.

The engine oil pump on a car is usually mounted on the front of the crankshaft or in the oil crankcase.

The oil pump installed in the oil crankcase requires disassembling the oil crankcase in order to remove the oil pump.
The engine must be raised, or in some cars, it is necessary to remove some components of the power steering and suspension in order to remove the oil crankcase.

For the oil pump mounted on the front crankshaft, it is a bit more difficult and takes longer to remove, because many components of the front of the engine must be disassembled.

The worst possible cause of the low engine oil pressure problem is wearing on the crankshaft bearings, where the fix is to overhaul the engine completely and replace the crankshaft bearings.
