The function of the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) is to warn that one or more of your car’s tires are under-inflated, which can be dangerous if left unchecked.

When that happens, the orange indicator shaped like a horseshoe with an exclamation point in the middle will light up. Obviously, TPMS is very helpful for drivers to be aware of the condition of their tires, and prevent accidents caused by under-inflated tires.

Before TPMS was invented, the only way you could know if tire pressure was safe or not was to get out of the car and stick a tire pressure gauge into the tire. Of course, it is not practical and quite risky because the driver does not know the condition of the tires in real-time.

Currently, there are two types of TPMS in use, namely direct TPMS and indirect TPMS. What are the differences between the two? Check out the explanation below

Direct TPMS (Direct TPMS)

Direct TPMS relies on pressure monitoring sensors on each tire to monitor air pressure, not just tire rotation data from the ABS system.

The direct TPMS sensor can even provide information about tire temperature. All data from the TPMS sensor is sent wirelessly to a central module where the data is analyzed, decoded, and if the tire pressure is lower than it should be, sent directly to your car’s Multi-Information Display via an illuminated indicator.

Each sensor has its own serial number, and the system not only distinguishes one car from another but is more specific. Between one tire to another.

Each manufacturer has its own direct TPMS technology, so you can only repair the sensor at a specialized workshop and not haphazardly.

Indirect TPMS (TPMS Indirect)

Different from direct TPMS which has a special sensor to monitor tire pressure, indirect TPMS depends on the wheel speed sensor used by ABS. These sensors measure how high each wheel is turning, and can be used by the onboard computer system to compare each wheel, as well as other data such as speed.

Based on the rate of rotation of each wheel, the computer can translate the normal tire pressure on your car. When the tires spin faster than expected, the computer usually deduces the tire pressure is below standard and alerts the driver immediately.

So, indirect TPMS basically doesn’t measure tire pressure. It doesn’t work the same way you measure tire pressure with a gauge but instead measures how fast the tire is rotating and sends a signal to the computer if there’s an abnormality in rotation.
