Intake Air Temperature Sensor Function – IAT Sensor
IAT or Intake Air Temperature sensor has an important role in adjusting the temperature changes in the intake manifold. To be able to detect the change in temperature, the Intake Air Temperature sensor uses a thermistor.
This thermistor will help the Intake Air Temperature Sensor to see changes in the intake temperature by comparing the resistance values. So, it means this, when the air entering the intake has a low temperature, the resistance value in the thermistor will be high. And this is where what is meant by comparing the resistance values so that the Intake Air Temperature Sensor can adjust the temperature changes that occur around it.

The intake air temperature sensor is usually located in the intake manifold so that its tip will be exposed to air entering the engine. On engines that use a mass airflow sensor (MAF) to monitor the volume of air entering the engine, the MAP sensor will also have an air temperature sensor built into it. Some engines may also have more than one air temperature sensor (two if they have separate intake manifolds or separate intake manifolds on V6 or V8 engines).
The water temperature sensor is a thermistor. This means that the electrical resistance changes in response to changes in temperature.

This sensor works in conjunction with the engine coolant temperature sensor. The ECU/ECM applies a reference voltage to the sensor – usually 5 volts. Then look at the voltage signal it receives back to calculate the air temperature. The reverse voltage signal will change proportionally with changes in air temperature. Most air temperature sensors are negative temperature coefficient thermistors (NTC). This type is characterized by high electrical resistance when they are cold, but lower resistance when they heat up.
However, some work in the opposite way. They are positive temperature coefficient thermistors (PTC). This type of thermistor has low resistance when cold, and increased resistance when hot. The changing sensor resistance causes a change in the reverse voltage back to the PCM.

Other IAT Sensors Application
In older pre-OBD II applications (1995 & older vehicles), the system uses signals from the air temperature sensor also to activate the cold start injector when the outside air temperature is cold. In some applications, the system uses the air temperature sensor signal as well to delay the opening of the EGR valve until the engine reaches operating temperature.
The air temperature sensor is also useful for Automatic Climate Control systems. One or more air temperature sensors to monitor the air temperature inside the passenger compartment, as well as the outside air temperature. Climate control systems usually have a separate outdoor air temperature sensor located outside the engine compartment so that engine heat does not affect it. The outdoor air temperature sensor will usually be behind the grille or in a cover area at the base of the windshield. Most of these sensors work exactly the same as the engine air temperature sensor. But some use infrared sensors to monitor the body temperature of the occupants of the vehicle.
